Homes in Elmhurst, a community that utilized the Homes for a Changing Region program in 2025.

CHICAGO (May 28, 2026) — We are glad to announce that slots are available for assistance in the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus’ Homes for a Changing Region housing planning program. Since 2005, the program has helped over 70 municipalities, nearly one in four of our region’s communities, understand and respond to changes in their local housing markets.

Homes for a Changing Region provides fast and highly targeted technical assistance through data analysis of housing needs, a community survey, focus group discussions with local stakeholders, a panel of housing experts to help with brainstorming solutions, and a housing action plan that identifies recommendations and external funds for implementation. Recognizing that there is no one-size-fits-all approach, the program helps municipal leaders identify tailored strategies for the needs of their communities.

Homes for a Changing Region is a good fit for any municipality grappling with important housing questions, including:

  • Who lives in the community I serve? Are they spending too much on housing?
  • Can existing residents afford to stay here in the years to come?
  • How can housing maintenance and rehabilitation be improved?
  • Does this development proposal make sense for my community?

Assistance is free. However, our slots for the 2026-2027 offering are limited. Please fill out the application at this link by Friday, June 19, to be considered for this free assistance. For more information, please contact Ben Schnelle at bschnelle@mayorscaucus.org.
