In 2014, the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus partnered with the Latino Policy Forum and the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) to develop the Immigrant Integration Toolkit, a resource that guides member municipalities who want to be active in immigrant integration activities. This project was a part of CMAP’s Local Technical Assistance (LTA) program.
This project built off the work the Caucus undertook in 2011 to gather information on immigrant integration efforts taking place in suburban municipalities. At that time, a survey was distributed to member communities and follow-up interviews were conducted with selected municipalities. This research was compiled into a guidebook – “Immigrant Integration in Chicago’s Suburbs: A Survey of Current Activities and Efforts.” It contains profiles of municipalities that are making efforts to address the needs of their immigrant populations and information about organizations that provide resources to immigrants living in the suburbs.
Preparing Municipalities for Executive Actions on Immigration
The Diversity Issues Task Force helped to provide information to its members on various executive actions relating to immigration and implications for municipalities. The Latino Policy Forum met with the Task Force in March 2017 and provided a memo outlining President Trump’s executive orders on sanctuary cities and border security and implications for local communities. The Task Force will continue to serve as a source of information for our region’s municipalities on these issues.
