Project Sidewalk – Data Collection & Barrier Removal

The University of Illinois at Chicago and the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus are seeking participants for a workshop on sidewalk accessibility. The workshop will focus on how municipalities can collect sidewalk data and use them for planning improvements. Participants and facilitators will discuss how best to customize this data collection for their community, from community engagement strategies to the use of collected data for planning. Participants will also receive an overview of the online data collection tool Project Sidewalk and examples of its implementation. Participants can be teams or individuals that include, municipal leaders, managers, and planners who could use sidewalk data as part of a variety of planning efforts that include accessibility, pedestrian safety, aging in place, public works, and sustainability.

The University of Illinois at Chicago is conducting a research study to improve and evaluate sidewalk data collection and assessment techniques, such as by using crowdsourcing and artificial intelligence. We would like your input to help understand new ways our tools and the data collected can be used to plan for more accessible cities. See the workshop information sheet here.
